This course is designed for industrial hygienists and other occupational safety and health professionals, such as OSHA compliance officers, or biological safety officers, to provide basic and applied information on biological safety. The course will include basic concepts of microbiology and disease transmission in the workplace. The OSHA Bloodborne Pathogens Standard, including the OSHA enforcement guidelines will be discussed. The CDC/NIH Biosafety in Microbiological and Biomedical Laboratories, and legislation on bioterrorism and select agents are also included. The course is intended for those new to the field of biological safety and will provide an understanding of infectious disease transmission and the principles for control of biological hazards in the workplace.
Basic concepts and principles of microbiology, disease transmission, and infection control; laboratory and occupationally-acquired infections; disposal of infectious and biomedical wastes and shipment of biohazardous materials; compliance with OSHA Bloodborne Pathogens; principles of decontamination, disinfection and sterilization; the certification testing, principles of operation, and use of engineering controls such as biological safety cabinets; the role of Institutional Biosafety Committees in reviewing recombinant DNA; procedures for environmental sampling for bacteria and fungi, and legislation on bioterrorism and select agents are also included.
