Introduction

For 30 years, beginning with ELB and Associates and continuing through Coble, Taylor & Jones Safety Associates, LLC the Annual Occupational Safety and Health Update has been presented to inform attendees of the latest developments in safety and health trends and regulatory issues facing US employers. The 31st Annual Occupational Safety and Health Update will include a broad array of topics of interest, including CDC Update on Pandemic Influenza (H1N1) Virus and Vaccine, Global Occupational Health, Globally Harmonized System and OSHA’s Hazard Communication Standard and much more.

Conference Presenters (partial list)

The team of Coble, Taylor & Jones Safety Associates, LLC and their special guest speakers will bring objective observations and practical advice about safety and health issues facing employers.  Each conference presenter brings numerous years of experience in the field of occupational safety and health. Mr. Coble, Mr. Taylor and Mr. Jones each have 30-plus years of experience in safety and health with government, private industry, working for OSHA, and as consultants to a wide variety of employers in North America, South America, Europe and Africa.

Robert K. "Bob" Andrews Jr., CSP, MBA is Director of Safety and Risk Management for the North Carolina Department of Transportation.

William Atkinson, MD, MPH is a Medical Epidemiologist in the National Center for Immunization and Respiratory Diseases at the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention in Atlanta, Georgia.  Dr. Atkinson received his undergraduate and medical degrees from the University of Missouri Kansas City School of Medicine followed by postgraduate training in Internal Medicine, Infectious Diseases, and Preventive Medicine.  He has worked in Public Health his entire professional career, first with the Louisiana State Health Department in New Orleans, and since 1989 with the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention in Atlanta.  Until 1995, he was responsible for measles surveillance and outbreak investigations for the National Immunization Program.  Since 1995 his principle responsibility has been to develop technical and training materials for immunization providers.  He is the author or coauthor of 50 scientific papers and book chapters on vaccine-related topics, including Epidemiology and Prevention of Vaccine-Preventable Diseases, commonly known as the “Pink Book”, now in its 11th edition (2009).  He has conducted more than 100 vaccine training courses, given more than 600 invited lectures on immunization, and is the principal writer and presenter for 97 nationwide satellite broadcasts and webcasts on vaccine-preventable diseases.  These courses have been attended by more than 300,000 health care providers throughout the country.

Raymond P. Boylston, CSP is semi-retired after a 45-year safety career. He was with DuPont for 22 years helping the DuPont Kinston plant set a world safety record, was NC OSHA's first Director, founder of Ennis Lumsden Boylston and Associates in 1978, and was national president of the ASSE in 1989-1990. He is also a Fellow in the ASSE, and has received every major safety recognition.   Ray is also a very accomplished author.

Kathleen Buckheit, MPH, RN, COHN-S/CM/SM, FAAOHN is the Director of Continuing Education at the North Carolina Occupational Safety and Health Education and Research Center,  NC Institute for Public Health, Gillings School of Global Public Health, University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill.  She has over twenty years experience in occupational health, including industry, ergonomics and occupational health nursing.  She received an MPH at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, BSN at Western Connecticut State College and RN from Mt. Sinai Hospital School of Nursing.  Kathleen is passionate about providing quality education to occupational and environmental health and safety professionals.

Donald Chaney is an Industrial Hygiene Consultant with the Health Hazards Control Unit, North Carolina Department of Health and Human Services, Division of Public Health, Occupational & Environmental Epidemiology Branch.

David F. Coble, MS, CSP has a total of 30 years of safety experience: 12 years with NC OSHA and 17 years in consulting. He is President of Coble, Taylor & Jones Safety Associates, LLC. He is an authorized OSHA Outreach Instructor, Chairman of the ASME/ANSI B15.1 Committee, a professional member of the ASSE since 1976, a frequent author and conference speaker, and has a Master's Degree in Safety Management from the University of Arizona.

Pat Curran, CIH has over 34 years of industrial hygiene expertise.  Prior to retiring from the North Carolina Division of Public Health in 2004, Pat’s career in Public Health included conducting OSHA inspections and providing industrial hygiene consultative services to industry, government agencies and the public.  He has served on numerous safety, health and environmental committees pertaining to respiratory protection, industrial hygiene, industrial ventilation, asbestos and lead.  He continues to provide consultative services and present continuing education programs in occupational health and safety. 

Deana Holmes is a Health Scientist in OSHA’s Directorate of Standards and Guidance, Office of Chemical Hazards-Metals, Washington, DC.  She has been with OSHA for six years and works in the area of Hazard Communication.

Jim Jones, ARM is Vice President of Coble, Taylor & Jones Safety Associates, LLC. He has 30 years of safety experience including 5 years with NC OSHA, 12 years as corporate safety manager for a large retail and manufacturing chain, and 12 years in consulting. Mr. Jones is an authorized OSHA Outreach Instructor, professional member of the ASSE, and member of the ANSI 01 Woodworking Machinery committee.

Kathy Landkrohn is a Health Scientist for OSHA’s Directorate of Standards and Guidance, Office of Chemical Hazards -Metals, Washington, DC.  She has over 30 years of experience in environmental, safety and health.  Her work with OSHA includes Hazard Communication, Process Safety Management, and Reactive Chemical Hazards.

Bonnie Rogers, DrPH, COHN-S, LNCC, FAAN is an Associate Professor in the UNC Gillings School of Global Public Health's Public Health Leadership Program and Director of the North Carolina Occupational Safety and Health Education and Research Center and the Occupational Health Nursing Program.  Dr. Rogers is also Vice-president of the International Commission on Occupational Health (ICOH) which is an international, nongovernmental, professional society whose aims are to foster the scientific progress, knowledge and development of occupational health and safety in all its aspects.  Dr. Rogers has practiced as a public health nurse, occupational health nurse clinician and educator and is a widely recognized researcher in the field of hazards to health care workers. She has published more than 150 articles and two textbooks, and is associate editor for a third text.

Bill Taylor, CSP, is Vice President of Coble, Taylor & Jones Safety Associates, LLC. He has 29 years of safety experience with a large tobacco processing company, Safety Manager for the City of Durham for 10 years and 14 years in safety consulting. He is a professional member and a past president of the NC Chapter of the ASSE and the Mid-State Safety Council. He is also an authorized OSHA Outreach Instructor.

The 31st Annual OSH Update will be held at The Friday Center located at 100 Friday Center Drive, Chapel Hill, NC 27599 approximately three miles east of the UNC-Chapel Hill campus, just off Highway 54 East (Raleigh Road). The Center is a short distance from Interstate 40 (from Raleigh, I-40 exit 273A; from Greensboro, I-40 exit 273).
