Building a comprehensive hazmat program for emergency responses to hazardous materials incidents in the healthcare sector can be difficult, even for experienced EH&S professionals. Traditional hazmat course agendas focus on large hazmat incidents that occur in our everyday surroundings and environment, while this course is healthcare specific and focuses on practical response initiatives tailored to the healthcare environment and resources. Attendees will gain the knowledge and resources to build an effective program to manage the following:
- Recognition and inventory of healthcare specific hazardous materials
- Internal hazmat spills (small vs. large)
- Internal hospital hazmat response teams
- External hazmat incidents (influx of contaminated patients vs. ED walk – ins)
- NIMS / HICS implementation for hazardous materials and waste incidents
- Coordination with local and outside agencies, including local emergency planning committees
- Spill reporting and incident investigation
- Training requirements and expectations
- Statement of physical and medical qualification
- 29 CFR 1910.120 – Hazardous Waste Operations and Emergency Response
- OSHA Best Practices for Hospital–Based First Receivers of Victims from Mass Casualty Incidents Involving the Release of Hazardous Substances
- 2009 Joint Commission Environment of Care and Emergency Management standards
- Utilization of hospital MSDS management system, DOT Emergency Response Guidebook, and NIOSH pocket guide
- Inventory, maintenance, and selection of appropriate personal protective equipment
- Industrial hygiene in healthcare hazardous materials response initiatives
- Planning and coordinating response actions with the emergency department and treating physicians
- Case studies and scenarios
